Coaching requirements

General Requirements needed to Coach in the Hudson City School District

The first 2 requirements must be met before an individual is allowed to attend or hold a practice/game with students.

  1. Current CPR/AED certification (must recertify once a year, even if the card is valid for 2 years). See attached list of approved courses.
  2. Current 1st Aid Certification (American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies course or New York State First Aid for Coaches) See attached list of approved courses.
  3. Successful completion of fingerprinting by the school district. This cost is incurred by the individual. Exception would be those already on file with the state and those that are grandfathered in.
  4. For NYS Certified Teachers;
    1. A series of 3 coaching courses that must be completed within 5 years of beginning service.
    2. Copies of certificates of completion of the 3 coaching courses given to Athletic Director for personnel file.
  5. For non NYS Certified Teachers:
    1. Must apply for a temporary coaching certificate from the State Education Department.

    3. Copies of certificates of completion of the 3 coaching courses given to Athletic Director for personnel file.
    4. Must apply for a professional coaching certification from the State Education Department upon completion of the required coaching courses. The certification is renewable.

Application process for coaching in the Hudson City School District

  1. All persons applying for a coaching vacancy must fill out an application and return to the Athletic Director with ALL necessary certifications attached.
  2. Deadlines for applications are:
    1. Fall and Winter Sports due April 15th.
    2. Spring Sports due December 1st.
  3. All qualified applications will be reviewed and recommendations made by the Athletic Director and building Principal will be forwarded to the Superintendent.
    * Please note that per contract, qualified members of the HCSD teaching unit will be given preference in the recommendation and hiring process.*
  4. Successful candidates will be notified by the Athletic department and the Human Resource office.
  5. Those candidates not chosen will receive notification from the Athletic department.

Courses Accepted As Meeting The Coaches First Aid And Cpr Requirement As Of January 2009

FIRST AID

  1. A State Education Department approved agency that offers First Aid using the SED course outlines and time requirements: 12 hours initial; 5.5 hours update (valid for 3 years) (www.emsc.nysed.gov/ciai/physed.html - Click on Approved Courses)
  2. American Red Cross:
    1. Responding to Emergencies (24 hour course that includes CPR certification)
  3. NYS DOH/Bureau of Emergency Medical Services:
    1. Certified First Responder
  4. National Safety Council
    1. First Aid Taking Action
    2. First Responder

ADULT CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR)

  1. A State Education Department approved agency that offers CPR using the SED course outlines and time requirements: 4 hours initial; 2 hours update (must be renewed every year to be valid) (www.emsc.nysed.gov/ciai/physed.html - Click on Approved Courses)
  2. National Safety Council (NSC):
    1. CPR/ AED Course
  3. American Heart Association Courses (AHA):
    1. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    2. Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (BLS)
  4. American Red Cross Courses (ARC):
    1. Adult CPR/AED
    2. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (credited for CPR only…not First Aid)
    3. Responding to Emergencies (credited for both CPR and First Aid)
  5. American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI)
    1. Adult CPR/AED

SED does not require the following to have separate certification in First Aid/CPR to coach:

  1. Registered Nurse – Nurse Practitioner – LPN - Nurse Aide
  2. Physician – Physician Assistant
  3. Licensed Physical Therapist
  4. Certified Emergency Medical Technician*
  5. Certified National Athletic Trainer*
  6. Fire and Police officers* - (full time officers)
