High School Students Get “Into” Sharks

Students in Jim McDarby’s Marine Science class participated in a project that is typically reserved for undergraduate biology students – dissecting sharks.

The Marine Science Class teaches juniors and seniors how the ocean is abundant with many diverse and unique life forms.  Investigating sharks offers students a fun way to explore different body systems.

“My students found a new appreciation for the anatomy of a shark,” said Mr. McDarby, who instructed students to investigate the body structures of the shark, discovering how the structure and all its parts function together to allow for survival in the ocean environment.

“This was the most fun I’ve ever had at school,” claimed one student, who was amazed at the complexity of the sharks anatomy.  “There is a lot more to learn about sharks.”

Mr. McDarby hopes this new found appreciation for sharks and Marine Science better prepares his students for college level science and an overall appreciation for our environment.
